Bike preparation has been an ongoing process. We prefer to do stuff like this much more than doing paperwork and such. We should have documented all of the things we have done to the bikes, but often forgot the camera, or were just to lazy. Here are some photos and brief descriptions of some of the things we have done to the bikes. We will show the final big jobs to be done in Germany as well as the finished product of what the bikes will be heading into the middle east in a couple of weeks.
This is the huge job of adding an extra fuel tank to the bikes. The original tank is located under the seat and is 4.2 gallons. The new tank will mount where most bike tanks in front of the rider and are 5.4 gallons. This will give us a range of almost 500 miles. Pretty legit for the Sahara.
We were told by our buddies at the BMW San Francisco dealership (very cool guys), that we were truly underestimating the time needed to do the job. Many many man hours later we fumbled along and completed the job. Well mostly, the tank still leaks from one of the hoses on my bike, but its mounted and connected to the original tank.
We also decided to spray some UV protection on the extra tank. We thought leaving it a gritty black would look more inconspicuous as well as giving it that sweet Mad Max feeling.
We will continue to update this when I put on my side boxes and finish all the electrical.....and so on...and so on. I will also add some pictures of sweet after market things we bought. Mostly from our friends at http://www.advdesigns.com/ . These guys ride like we do and carry all the stuff one could want for a trip like ours.We have done so much yet so little.
